PAPER
COLLECTION
In the spring of 2001, the Paper
Collection of the Texas Confederate Museum Collection was placed at Haley
Library and History Center, Midland, Texas. In keeping with the mission
statement of the Texas Division United Daughters of the Confederacy, this
material is made available to the public for research and educational
purposes. Included in the Paper Collection are
documents from Texas, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, Virginia,
and Ohio Regiments including rosters, letters, orders, pictures, deeds,
songs, receipts, newspaper clippings, and journals; the John S.Rip Ford Collection; Gribble, McEntire, Hill and Hood documents; various families papers and other miscellaneous material. The Texas Division UDC is indebted to
the members of the Seven Brothers Theus Chapter
2393, Midland, TX, for their volunteer hours
in preparing the indexes for the collection. To provide easy accessibility
for research, the material is cross-indexed. For example, a letter from A. W.
Terrell to W. H. King would be listed under both names, as well as Sulphur Springs where the letter was mailed from. Similar
entries pertaining to places mentioned in the contents of the letter would
also be indexed. Many hours of work by the Theus
Chapter has been devoted to the slow process of placing the fragile documents
into mylar sleeves, to prevent further
deterioration. There are priceless documents housed in this collection and
the work to index and sleeve the papers is ongoing. The Paper Collection index may be viewed
at http://www.haleylibrary.com. (Go to Research, Confederate Museum
Collection.) After reviewing the index, you may fax, call or email Jim
Bradshaw, Archivist, at the Haley Library with your request for copies. Allow
2-3 working days. The Haley Library and History Center |
